The obverse has a bust of Rafael Carrera encircled by the legend RAFAEL CARRERA P. DELA R.DE GUATEMALA. The reverse has the denomination 4 REALES and the date 1860 within a wreath. The fineness 21 Q and the assayer's mark R is below the wreath.

The obverse has Guatemalan national arms wit the country's name REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA around the top and the date 1926 at the bottom. The reverse has a quetzal bird perched on a pillar that is inscribed 30 DE JUNIO DE 1871 with the Spanish legend LEY DE 26 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1924 (Law of 26 September 1924) around the top. The denomination 20 is to the left of the pillar and QUETZALES below the pillar.
